Hippolyta, Queen of the exiled amazons on the island of Themyscira, desperately desired a daughter. Upon the instructions of the greek gods, Hippolyta formed Diana from clay and she was brought to life, blessed with the beauty of Aphrodite, the wisdom of Athena, the strength of Hercules and the speed of Hermes.
For a thousand years she studied and served her mother, being warned never to leave Themyscira, until one day US Air Force pilot Steve Trevor accidentally crashed on the island. Diana brought him back to health, but Hyppolyta insisted that Captain Trevor couldn't remain on the island. He would have to be returned to the world of the patriarchs.
After a lengthy dispute with her mother, Diana volunteered to take Steve back to his world. For her own protection, she was armed with indestructible bracelets and the Lasso of Truth.
Amazed by the cruelty and injustice of the world of the patriarchs, she remained, using the alias Diana Prince as a secret identity, but defending the innocent as Wonder Woman.
